What is Radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed from Uranium decay in soil and rock. It is invisible, odourless, and tasteless, detectable only with special equipment. Though low risk outdoors, it can build up indoors, posing a serious lung cancer risk – second only to smoking. It is present in most homes, though levels vary. Professional mitigation systems can effectively reduce Radon levels, protecting your home and health.
Radon removal (mitigation) in Canada typically involves installing an Active Soil Depressurization System (ASDS), also known as a Sub-Slab Depressurization System. Here’s how it works:
How is Radon Mitigation Performed?
Step 1
Installation: First, we assess the home and determine possible sites for the mitigation system. Next, we analyze how radon gas may enter the home and evaluate the need for any necessary repairs. Once these steps are complete, we core a hole through the concrete slab (or utilize the rough-in from the builder) at the chosen site and insert a pipe into the soil or gravel beneath the foundation.
Step 2
Suction: A special radon fan is connected to the pipe, creating a suction that draws radon gas from beneath the foundation. It is important to select the right size of fan to ensure effective radon removal.
Step 3
Venting: The Radon-laden air is then vented outdoors, safely away from your home.

How much does radon mitigation cost?
Radon mitigation costs in Alberta typically range from $1,800 to $3,000+, depending on the size and design of the home, the foundation type, and the complexity of the installation. At Alberta Radon Group, we also offer flexible payment options to help make radon mitigation more affordable for homeowners. Contact us today for more details.
The most common solution is a sub-slab depressurization system, which uses a vent pipe and fan to safely redirect radon gas from beneath your foundation to the outdoors. Additional costs may apply if your home requires foundation crack sealing, multiple vent runs, longer piping, or specialized equipment.
If you’ve already completed radon testing and know mitigation is needed, book an appointment today for a free in-home assessment and consultation with our certified team.
How long does the mitigation job take?
A typical radon mitigation installation takes 4 to 8 hours to complete. The exact timeline depends on the size and layout of the home, the type of system being installed, and any adjustments required to the existing structure. In most cases, our certified team can complete the installation in one day. Once the system is installed, we may conduct testing to confirm it is effectively reducing radon levels and protecting your home.
How do I know if I need to have a mitigation system installed?
You should consider installing a radon mitigation system if levels in your home are consistently at or above 200 Bq/m³, which is the Canadian guideline for acceptable radon concentration.
To get started, book a radon test to accurately measure your home’s levels. If results exceed the guideline, a mitigation system is recommended to reduce exposure and improve indoor air quality.
Even at levels below 200 Bq/m³, some homeowners choose mitigation to further reduce long-term health risks, as radon exposure is a leading cause of lung cancer in Canada.
How does Radon gas enter my home?
Radon gas enters homes through natural openings in the foundation and originates from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and groundwater beneath your property.
Common entry points include:
- Cracks in basement floors and walls
- Construction joints
- Gaps around service pipes
- Slab-to-foundation joints
- Sump pits
- Wall cavities
- Well water systems
Because radon is a naturally occurring gas, it can move easily through soil and enter areas where indoor air pressure is lower than the ground outside. Once inside, it can build up to unsafe levels without proper ventilation or mitigation.
My house is new/old, what would that mean for my radon levels?
Radon levels in a home are not determined by age alone. Both new and older homes can have elevated radon levels, which is why testing is essential.
New homes:
Modern construction is often more airtight for energy efficiency, which can trap radon gas indoors and lead to higher concentrations.
Older homes:
Older properties may have cracks, gaps, or foundation wear that allow radon to enter. However, levels can still vary widely depending on ventilation and construction type.
The only way to know your home’s radon level is through professional testing.
Is mitigation something I can do myself?
Radon mitigation is more than just installing a pipe and fan. It requires expert knowledge, proper tools, and proven techniques to identify the best system design, seal radon entry points, and install effective ventilation.
Our certified team carefully assesses your home, designs a customized mitigation system, and verifies results through post-installation testing to ensure safe, reliable performance.
Improper installation can reduce effectiveness or even worsen indoor air quality. Trust experienced professionals to protect your family’s health and ensure your system is done right the first time.
My neighbour had high levels of Radon, does that mean my house will too?
High radon levels in a neighbour’s home do not necessarily mean your home will have elevated levels as well. Radon concentrations can vary significantly between nearby properties due to differences in construction, ventilation, foundation type, and the soil conditions beneath each home.
The only way to know your actual radon level is to complete a professional radon test in your own home.
